Bunker Fuel Testing & Quantity Surveys

Independent bunker fuel testing and quantity surveys: MARPOL-compliant sampling, laboratory analysis to ISO 8217 and qualified surveyors witnessing deliveries, protecting your vessel against off-spec fuel and short supply.

Service Overview

Protect Every Bunker Stem With Testing & Surveys

Fuel quality and quantity problems can damage engines, delay vessels and lead to costly disputes. OceanicNova arranges independent fuel testing and qualified bunker surveyors so every delivery is measured, sampled and documented correctly.

If something goes wrong, you have clear, independent evidence to support your position with the supplier.

Results Before the Fuel Is Used

Samples are sent to accredited laboratories for analysis against ISO 8217, and results are reported so your engineers can decide how to manage the fuel before it is burned.

Who It Is For

Who Needs Fuel Testing & Surveys?

ISO 8217 Laboratory Analysis

Viscosity, density, sulphur, water, flash point, cat fines (Al + Si), sediment and stability tested against the ordered specification.

Bunker Quantity Surveys

Opening and closing gauging of barge and vessel tanks, temperature and density corrections, and reconciliation against the BDN.

Mass Flow Meter Verification

Review of meter readings, seals and printouts on deliveries made by mass flow meter.

Pre-Delivery Checks

Barge documents, tank soundings and sampling arrangements checked before pumping starts, including checks for entrained air.

Questions & Answers

Fuel Testing & Survey FAQs

Clear answers to the questions ship operators ask us most often.

Q1 Why should we test bunker fuel before using it?
Off-specification fuel can block filters, cause abnormal wear and damage engines. Testing a representative sample against ISO 8217 lets your engineers confirm quality, plan treatment or keep the fuel segregated before it is used.
Q2 Which parameters are tested?
A standard analysis covers the main ISO 8217 parameters, including viscosity, density, sulphur, water, flash point, aluminium plus silicon (cat fines), total sediment and ignition quality (CCAI). Extended tests can be arranged if contamination is suspected.
Q3 What does a bunker quantity surveyor do?
The surveyor gauges the barge tanks before and after delivery (and vessel tanks where required), checks temperatures and density, watches for practices such as air entrainment and reconciles the delivered quantity against the BDN.
Q4 Which samples and documents must be kept onboard?
Under MARPOL Annex VI, the MARPOL sample must stay under the vessel's control for at least 12 months, and the Bunker Delivery Note must be kept onboard for at least three years.
Q5 What happens if the fuel is off-spec or short-delivered?
We help you issue a note of protest, preserve the samples and evidence, arrange confirmatory testing where needed and follow up with the supplier to resolve the claim.
